Basic Home Security Tips

It’s a smart thought to consider home security. It does not matter whether you rent or own your home; anybody can be a casualty of burglary or worse. There are some inexpensive ways you can increase the security of your home. Here are things you can do today to start having a safer, more secure home.

Secure carport entryways and windows: Most homes have strong, secure front and back doors with well-equipped security locks. Sometimes the entry way from your garage is not as secure; this is the way many intruders or burglars gain entry to the home. Make sure you have strong doors with good locks on all the entry ways of your home.

Be aware of your surroundings: You should always secure your garage or shed, even if they do not give you entry into the home. If they are unsecured, an intruder can go in and find tools that they can then use to break into the house.

Watch your step: You also need to be aware of exterior stairs that lead to the second floor of your home. Intruders can use these to access the windows on the second floor of the home. Many homeowners neglect to lock the upstairs windows at night. Burglars know this and often take advantage of the opportunity to gain easy entry on the second floor. Make sure you always lock your upstairs windows as well as those downstairs.

Change locks when moving into another home: Anytime you move into a new house or apartment you should change the locks on all the entryways. If you do not, you have no idea how many people have copies of the keys and access to your house.

Install a security door viewer or peephole at your front entryway: Even as a child, you were presumably advised never to open the entryway to outsiders. This is wise advice even for grown-ups. Keeping in mind the end goal to see who is at the entryway, consider introducing a security peephole. The peephole makes it simple to see who is outside without them seeing in, and it’s a cheap home security feature you can add.

Install surveillance cameras: Home surveillance cameras can be added to safeguard your property as well as your family. It keeps your property (home, hardware, and other expensive things) more secure. Home security cameras make it easy to see everything that is happening in the house.

Your home can be easily more secure without spending a great deal in purchasing complex hardware. With a little effort and some awareness of your surroundings you too can make your home more secure with these basic tips.
